Union Corner
“Unions tell us their primary role in their first three letters: U N I”
Larry Holder
Union Corner is a labor-focused, community-centered radio program exploring the principles of worker rights, organized labor, social justice, and fair employment practices across Bermuda. Airing on Magic 102.7 FM, each episode features thought-provoking discussions, guest interviews, and practical insights designed to inform workers, address workplace concerns, and foster balanced industrial relations on the island.
Succeeding the late Larry Scott (“Brother Scotty”)—the original host of Union Corner who set the standard—the host’s vision for Union Corner is to inform, inspire, and interview. The goal is not merely to be right, but to reach what is right, provoking conversation through productive and progressive thought for guests, callers, and listeners alike. This commitment ensures that labor’s story is told truthfully by labor itself, rather than distorted by mass or social media through untruths, half-truths, and misinformation.
Their humble background as a trade unionist began with 15 years as a hospitality worker, followed by 27 years at the Bermuda Post Office. Within the Postal Division, they served as a Delegate, Divisional Executive, Assistant Secretary, Vice President, and ultimately President. They were given the opportunity to write as a columnist for the BIU Workers Voice, while also attending local seminars and workshops hosted by the BIU’s Education Officer. Selected to represent the BIU at overseas conferences, workshops, and seminars across the Caribbean and Europe, these experiences allowed both the BIU and the individual to build an international standing as a trade unionist. Following retirement in 2017, they were asked a few years later to serve as an Arbitration Tribunal Panelist for the BIU—an offer graciously accepted.
Mariners, clergy, teachers, and healthcare workers will often tell you that their work is more than just a job; the same holds true for trade unionism. One’s social and moral DNA, coupled with training and humility, allows those being served to recognize fairness, integrity, honesty, and trust—especially when difficult decisions must be made that also extend to those sitting across the negotiating table.
“In solidarity. United we stand, divided we fall.”
